Cold Comfort: My Love Affair With the Arctic (McGill-Queen's Native and Northern Series)

Author: Graham W. Rowley
Average review score:

Let's go north!
Rowley's fresh and colloquial style of narrative makes you feel at home in the arctic. While you read you can feel the cold wind in your face, you hear the dogs breathing and the ice cracking and you smell the fresh winter air. You start longing for the moment when you can meet all those friendly Inuit. And when you finally get to the arctic you will see that not much has changed.

The complete guide to the Southwest Indian Ocean : Comores, Madagascar, Mauritius, Réunion, Seychelles
Published in Unknown Binding by Cornelius Books ()
Author: Iain Walker
Average review score:

Wonderful book
First of all, let me confess - I am an armchair traveller with respect to the Indian Ocean! Still saving up my few bob to go to some of the wonderful places mentioned in this book.

The book is amazingly detailed, especially in detailing the culture and history of the islands, and very readable.

My only criticism is that more photos would have been better!

Complete Puzzle World: Puzzle Island/Puzzle Town/Puzzle Farm/Puzzle Castle/Puzzle Planet/Puzzle Mountain (Usborne Young Puzzles)
Published in Paperback by E D C Publications (March, 1994)
Authors: Susannah Leigh, Brenda Haw, and Usborne Books
Average review score:

Can turn kids into book lovers.
This book is a compendium of a half-dozen short books, all of which have the same structure: a protagonist (boys and girls alternate in the various stories), whether a pirate, an astronaut, a knight or farmer, has to get from here to there, and encounters mazes, matching problems, problems finding lost objects and a fairly benign villain along the way. My 5-year old was fascinated with this book. She remains so, even though she has memorized all of the solutions and locations of the hidden objects. Since she can't read yet, Puzzle World was more than she could tackle alone, and that made for hours of participatory parenting, explaining the puzzles and watching her solve them. This book promotes thinking, lap time and a love of books.

BOUGHT THIS BOOK ON A WHIM VERY INTERSTING ONLY 64 PAGES AND APROX 10X14 BUT PACKED WITH HISTORICAL INFORMATION, DETAILS ON CONSTRUCTION, COMBAT HISTORY AND LOTS OF BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHS AND SOME EARLY DRAWINGS. CAPTIONS ARE WELL WRITTEN AND DO A GOOD JOB OF EXPLAINING THE PHOTOGARPHS. I RECOMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO LIKES OFFBEAT MILITARY SUBJECTS. THE ONLY TWO THINGS I THOUGHT COULD BE IMPROVED WAS THERE WAS NOT ANY UP TO DATE DRAWINGS OF LAYOUT (DRAWINGS PROVIDED WERE OLD AND HARD TO READ) OR HARDLY ANY UP TO DATE OR COLOR PICTURES. MOST OF LATER PICTURES WERE TAKEN RIGHT AFTER WW2. IF YOU LIKE OFFBEAT MILITARY SUBJECTS THIS MIGHT BE THE BOOK FOR YOU.

Coney Island: A Postcard Journey to the City of Fire
Published in Paperback by Brightwaters Pr (June, 1989)
Author: Richard Snow

City of Fire Breathes Life Into Coney Island's Past
Steeplechase Park's founder George C. Tilyou once said "If Paris is France, then Coney Island, between June and September, is the World". Richard Snow's charming history of the fabled "Sodom by the Sea" is a imaginative look at the formation of the most popular seaside resort of all time. Snow's own collection of period postcards are used to illustrate the rise of Coney from a mere seaside cluster of chowder stands and bathhouses to the pre-eminent American amusement park of it's time. The book focuses not only on the development of island's three great parks, Steeplechase Park, Luna Park and Dreamland, but on the creation of the rollercoaster, carousel, and the plethora of wonders and weirdness that established Coney Island as the most fabulous and free-wheeling destination in a straitlaced world. The author discusses the effects of this atmosphere of freedom on the society of the period and how it provided an outlet for the masses who flocked there during the summer months. The history of each

Coral Reefs: Ecology, Threats, and Conservation (World Life Library)

Brilliant Photography Illustrates Reef Ecology
A cousin of mine travels around the world to dive on the most beautiful reefs. Encouraged by that, but not being a diver, I've made it a point to snorkel and take glass-bottomed boats to look at reefs whenever they are present. All along, I've wondered why he found the skin diving to be so wonderful. Now, I know. Coral Reefs exposes a world of vivid and bizarre colors and shapes that I had never imagined could exist.

Having also listened to more talks about coral than I care to remember, I was also pleasantly surprised to learn a lot more than I knew before about the development of the reefs and the ecological challenges they face.

Of the many beautiful books focusing on nature's wonders that I have seen, I would have to rank this one near the top. At its modest price, this book is also a good value. If you only buy one nature book this year, buy this one!!!!!

After you finish the book, why not take a moment to plan how you can see one of the reefs close up on a future trip? Perhaps you should even consider learning to skin dive, if you don't already.

A Great Introduction For a Great Price
This wonderful little book is a great introduction to coral reefs for people who don't know a whole lot about them. Well worth it's price.

Coronado: The Enchanted Island
Published in Hardcover by Coronado Historical Association (1998)
Authors: Ray Brandes and Katherine E. Carlin
Average review score:

The Story of Coronado !!!!!!!
Katherine Carlin, one of the authors of this book loved Coronado and was among the founding members of the Coronado Historical Association. Katherine came to Coronado in 1928, and about the time the Coronado Ferries went out of commission and our little town was reached via the Coronado / San Diego bridge, she worked very hard gathering the stories and pictures to put this book together with the help of Dr. Brandes. She was a delightful person, and I remember her very fondly. While I do not know Dr. Ray Brandes, I do believe that his father was Sgt. Brandes of the Coronado Police Dept., and he was a role model of mine when he formed the Coronado Junior Police in the mid 1950's. This book will bring back memories to anyone who has spent time in Coronado in the early years before the Coronado bridge, the Coronado Shores, and the Coronado Cays. Enjoy! Helen

Corregidor
Published in Paperback by Cooper Square Press (November, 2000)
Author: Eric Morris
Average review score:

Timely reminder to: "Be Prepared"
"Corregidor" is a true-to-life "Winds of War" about the early stages of WWII for America. "Corregidor" traces memories of actual participants and research illustrating peacetime from mid year of 1941 to the fall of Bataan and Corregidor in the Philippines from December 1941 to May 1942. Great adventure depicting a true-to-life drama. Illustrates the strong heart of the American and Philippine troops who fought the battles and the failure of an unprepared military leadership. Many lessons of military and national leadership are demonstrated. In an age when the American military is searching for meaning and redefinition this is a must read for those interested in a properly prepared military.
